The pics on the inside of the Avant Wot Not sleeve may feel something like yearbook photos (how long's it been since Ari Hoenig had that much hair?), but the four members of Jazzheads weren't in quite as nascent a state as that would imply. Hoenig was well on the way to his current status as ber-in-demand NYC drummer (though still keeping one foot in Philly), and guitarist Tim Motzer had already begun his fruitful collaboration with King Britt when the two began putting their heads together after Motzer's weekly gigs with the Silk City house band. They combined forces with saxophonist Chris Cuzme and bassist Ben Bocardo, a couple of Texans picked up during Hoenig's stint at the University of North Texas, forming a before-its-time jam/jazz combo. Their debut CD was also the inaugural release for Motzer's 1K Recordings label, celebrating its 10th anniversary by pulling the gang back together for a re-release party.
