indie rock!
Somewhere along the line Polvo became a punchline, shorthand for the abstract impermeability inherent in indie rock's first wave. In part it's because in the 1990s, no one used more hard angles, sharp turns and squirrelly tunings than the dos guitarra barrage of Ash Bowie and Dave Brylawski; the other part is that after 1997's Shapes, Polvo up and disappeared, its members surfacing only occasionally with other outfits, its legacy largely unguarded. Now, Polvo (Spanish for dust or, vernacularly, sex or cocaine) has re-formed, not just to play Merge Records' 20th anniversary bash last weekend but in support of In Prism (Merge), the band's first record in 12 years. In Prism is part comeback and part unified field theory for a sound born of two restless guitarists who met in a college Spanish class.
