For Thomas Buildmore and Morgan Thomas, the best canvas is no canvas at all. Intended to explore the way in which we react to images as symbols, Buildmore says their black-and-white mural, painted directly on Leonard Pearlstein Gallery walls, will be a "visual mash-up of traditional, contemporary and pop iconography." The choice to forgo canvas increases the connection between the perceived and the perceiver, as the impermanence of the piece also increases its value, and therefore significance, to visitors.
