Sometimes it feels like the only thing that hopping on the crafting bandwagon has gotten us is a discarded, half-knitted scarf and low self-esteem.

Handmade Philly is hoping to provide a supportive place for us well-meaning newbies. Two years ago, the group was a dwindling collective of 10 artists who shared resources and knowledge only among themselves. Today, it's 70 DIYers strong and looking to increase its membership. "We want to use this as a community-building event," says coordinator Ruth Schanbacher. "And to introduce people to Handmade Philly."

ArtBeat will feature an open mic for musicians, a supplies swap and free workshops on everything from quilting with paper to making play mustaches. "Whether you're a child or an adult, everyone is encouraged to come out," says Schanbacher. "We want everyone who attends this to walk away with a new sense of community, and the empowering feeling of knowing that they can support themselves."
