The shocking killing of a 14-year-old boy by young lovers Richard Loeb and Nathan Leopold Jr. — just to see if they could do it — inspired a media frenzy back in 1924, when frenzy wasn't habitual. John Logan's drama Never the Sinner, presented by Mauckingbird Theatre Co., explores the complex relationship between the murderous millionaires — and also, through their famous defender, Clarence Darrow, the capital punishment debate. Mauckingbird produced last August's hauntingly beautiful Shakespeare's R&J (with Evan Jonigkeit, who plays Loeb); Peter Reynolds and Lindsay Mauck's company is establishing itself as the city's premier producers of gay-themed theater.
