For those of us who love to swig cold ones but don't know too much about the history of all that is fermented, the Mercer Museum is poised to school us. Local beer historian Rich Wagner (pictured) will lead a lecture centered on the brewing techniques and variations you might've come across in Philadelphia between the 17th and 19th centuries. Following the lecture, guests will sample beers (yay) from Yards Brewing Co. and Keystone Homebrew Supply. Reservation and pre-payment is required. Mercer Museum, 84 S. Pine St., Doylestown, 215-345-0210, ext. 123, mercermuseum.org.
To support the fight against childhood hunger, Share Our Strength holds events all over the country, bringing together esteemed chefs in multiple cities to spread awareness of the cause. For Philadelphia's fundraiser, slated for next Monday, culinary powerhouses like Marc Vetri, Jose Garces and 30 others will offer up sample sizes of artfully prepared fare. Specialty cocktails from APO Bar + Lounge will complement the spread; guests can participate in silent and live auctions. Tickets are $75 in advance and $85 at the door. Loews Philadelphia Hotel, 1200 Market St., 215-627-1200, strength.org/philadelphia.
The Philadelphia Mural Arts Program is teaming up with World Café Live to curate a trolley tour of our city's most gorgeous murals — and its tastiest beers, too. The event will begin at WCL with a Yards brew, soft pretzels and a tour of the venue's art, and then set off on a trolley jaunt, hitting up noted wall work along the way. During an intermission, guests will have the chance to tour Yards' facility on Delaware Avenue and sample more brewage before hopping back on the trolley, returning to WCL, drink a few more beers (!) for good measure and enjoying live music downstairs. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 215-222-1400, worldcafelive.com.
Superstitions be damned! Grey Lodge Pub is feeling lucky for its 13th birthday, and to celebrate, they're holding 13 events in one day this Saturday. The festivities will start early with a Dock Street Triskaidekaphilia Ente Wurst breakfast, and continue with activities like a bar joke contest, beer barrel bingo, comedians and an It's Always Sunny look-alike contest. Don't forget they'll be tapping tons of wicked beers, including rare specialty brews from Philadelphia Brewing Co., Victory and many more. This is a rare occasion where you can stay at one bar all day long and not feel bad about it (you know, if you're the type of insecure person who might feel bad about such a thing). Grey Lodge Pub, 6235 Frankford Ave., 215-825-5357, greylodge.com.
