Rock Show

Nobody in this town knows how to end a show like B.C. Camplight. Every couple months the big man with the high voice solicits a horn section and rocks a packed Johnny Brenda's (next one's this Fri., Aug. 21) with some sock-hopping, keyboard-pounding, top-of-his-lungs rock 'n' roll. Good golly, Miss Molly.

Actor

Critics are always saying Friday Night Lights, the TV show based on Buzz Bissinger's book, isn't about football. They're right. It's a show about family, class and the dying American small town that worships teen gods in the arena-church every Friday. But it's also a show about football, and my fave player is heartbreaking QB1 Matt Saracen — played by Zach Gilford, who can be seen in Post Grad (see our review). Catch up on DVD before it comes back this fall.

Blog

Matthew Gasteier has seen your lolcats. He is not amused. The author of the hit blog Fuck You, Penguin (fupenguin.com) can see past doe-eyed, head-cocked gazes and identify the real sins of the wild kingdom. With entries like "Sneaky hedgehogs want it both ways" and "Seals are always looking for a handout," Gasteier gives us all a fighting chance against the tyranny of excessive adorableness. Now available in convenient, take-to-the-zoo book form (F U, Penguin: Telling Cute Animals What's What, Villard, Aug. 25).

Movie Mockery

Mystery Science Theater 3000's awesomeness was directly proportional to the awfulness of the movie they were riffing on. So while RiffTrax — wherein MST3K alums Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett mock Hollywood blockbusters via mp3 commentary tracks — is pretty funny, this Thursday's live-in-the-multiplex (8 p.m. at the Riverview) attack on Plan 9 from Outer Space should be hilarious.
