Chef Corbin Evans is hosting the first-ever Shrimp Boil event to support Ray Brandhurst, a seventh-generation shrimper, in his fight against cancer. A Louisiana resident for part of his life, Evans planned this event to benefit the Brandhursts as well as to celebrate the reinvention of New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. Local favorites Mémé, Standard Tap, London Grill, Philadelphia Brewing Co. and others are donating food/drink in the form of fried chicken, bread pudding, cole slaw and beer, while Evans will prepare the main entrée: shrimp. Tickets are $30, but they're hoping to raise a total of $5,000 for the family by selling T-shirts and raffle tickets and accepting additional donations. Greensgrow Farm, 2501 E. Shofuso Japanese House and Garden is inviting guests to enjoy a solo performance by famed Koto musician Masayo Ishigure and a Japanese Bento dinner prepared by Mr. Yamada of Kingyo Japanese Restaurant. The dinner will feature a balance of traditional and modern Japanese cuisine that'll satisfy both American and Japanese palates, and the guest's choice of wine or sake and cold green tea will accompany the dishes. Members of the house and garden get a $10 discount for the event, but anyone with a love for Japanese culture can get in on the deal. WCL's sake tasting and karaoke afternoon will start with a presentation of the history of the drink and follow with a tasting of sakes like Ozeki Dry Sake, Jizake Kaori Sake and more.
