It's easy to spill the details of your family's stories at holiday dinners after too much wine. But could you open up over a cup of coffee? At theater company Gas & Electric Arts' storytelling event, organizers are banking on it: Attendees can swap their family's tales with others, all in the cozy atmosphere of a café. The stories will be shared while casually sitting in a circle, so elaborate performances aren't necessary, and an emphasis is placed on simply hearing others. "It's not just the telling, it's the listening," says artistic director Lisa Jo Epstein. "We're interested in having people embrace those untold family secrets and passing them along." If you're interested in listening further, the event leads up to Gas & Electric Art's Sept. 29 production of Cabinet of Wonders, a play that follows an immigrant family pondering the meaning and truths of their own yarns.
