In high school and college, nerds and jocks seem destined for self-segregation. Who would've thought a made-up sport centered around flying on a broomstick would join the two cliques together? Max Kaplan, now a junior at Chestnut Hill College, was inspired last year by Middlebury College's interpretation of Harry Potter's magical sport, Quidditch. "I thought people would think I was crazy," says Kaplan about pitching it as an intramural sport. He was also doubtful that anyone would sign up, but about 50 students did, and Chestnut Hill eventually went on to win third place at the 2008 Quidditch World Cup. At Friday's tournament, Chestnut Hill's eight teams will square off against each other in this mix of football, dodgeball, rugby and hide-and-go-seek, in order to determine who'll represent the school at this year's World Cup. Lots of Muggles, to be sure.
