Before Oklahoma! reinvented the musical, Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's Show Boat invented it. Show Boat is a microcosmic melting pot of our American musical heritage, with a still-unparalleled score that runs the gamut from operatic grandeur to gospel-inflected blues. And it takes on the subject of race relations with uncommon sensitivity. No wonder the legendary Florenz Ziegfeld, who produced the original Show Boat, nervously awaited its reception. But he needn't have worried. It was a classic — then and now.
