You can move from one place to another, but some things remain no matter what. So it is with Cynthia Oliver, a Bronx-born, Virgin Islands-raised, Illinois-based movement artist whose works are inspired by personal experience. With Rigidigidim De Bamba De: Ruptured Calypso, Oliver unearths the lives of Caribbean islanders, where the population represents a coalescence of African, European and other world cultures. Though social classes are stratified, everyone comes together through calypso. Oliver uses the lively sound to pace her multimedia exploration of disjointed identity. Employing her signature style of layered dance, music, history and mythology, she scrutinizes perceptions of community and self-image.
