Kicking off with the sampled voice of late Bush press secretary Tony Snow ("I don't want to hug the tar baby," chopped and repeated), Tarbaby's eponymous debut is a short, sharp kick of no-fooling-around attitude. The group — Philly pianist Orrin Evans, saxophonist Stacy Dillard, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Nasheet Waits (and, on the CD but no longer part of the band, saxophonist J.D. Allen) — establish in just over half an hour that jazz can be as urgent and belligerent as rock without fusing or blending, simply playing with teeth bared and the balls to back it up.
