NOW SEATING
Named for the year of Philly's founding, Square 1682 is a new eatery in Kimpton Hotels' swank Palomar, which officially opens today. The LEED-certified restaurant (our first) has a modern Art Deco feel, with bar/lounge seating on the ground floor and a more elaborate dining room (above) up top. Chef Guillermo Tellez takes a green approach to the food, too, sourcing meats and produce locally and adhering to sustainable seafood guidelines. Yet Tellez's spread is subtly global in approach, with smaller eats like a petite poblano pepper en nogada, a Serrano ham spread and a Korean "hot pot" of chili-glazed monkfish and crayfish; and entrées like lamb with white beans, chorizo, mint and spicy tomato jam; and yellowfin tuna with ginger-braised short ribs. More photos and, opening beer/cocktail lists and menus on Meal Ticket.
Open since Tuesday, baker Stephanie Thaw's new BYO eatery is an all-vegetarian sit-down specializing in pies both sweet and savory. Thaw, whose local/organic Sweet! products are carried at a number of city cafés, will switch out her selections daily, but specialties include vegetarian shepherd's pie, sweet potato enchilada, heirloom tomato, fig and almond, blackberry crumb, and pine nut and lavender honey in cornmeal. A rotating selection of soups and salads accompany the slices. Hours: Tue. to Thu., 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fri. to Sun., 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Full menu on Meal Ticket.
