Alan Palomo must have dragged a crate of Daft Punk and OMD 12-inches from the attic, popped them on the turntable and had a moment of inspiration. His new lo-fi dance project Neon Indian phases left-to-right and sharp-to-muffled on its debut Psychic Chasms (Lefse), bouncing in pitch like a stylus navigating hills and valleys of warped vinyl. Without proper enhancements, the lysergic surface can be irritating, but brush the aesthetic to the side and listen deeper for pointed dancefloor jams. "Terminally Chill" is a debonair slice of '70s wah-wah disco-soul, the title track a brilliant midtempo trip to a '90s chillout room. Then there's the matter of "Should Have Taken Acid With You," a poppy romp where Palomo perhaps anticipates the average listener's response to his mucky stylings. Is it foolhardy? Is it genius? The jury is still out, but the groove is undeniable.
