Pennsylvania Ballet opens its 46th season with a traditional bow in the direction of ballet genius and company godfather George Balanchine. Theme and Variations is a particularly elegant Balanchine opus, mixing his Imperial Russian ballet roots with Tchaikovsky's luscious music. In a completely different mood, choreographer-in-residence Matt Neenan presents At the Border, a world première. Inspired by the speed and complexity of John Adams' Hallelujah Junction, Neenan created a dance for 14 dancers which promises to match the music for unexpected complexity. Finally, Agnes de Mille's Rodeo — which Pennsylvania Ballet hasn't performed in nine years — showcases a spunky little cowgirl who dances, prances and tosses around a lariat in competition with two guys, a cowboy and a wrangler. Giddy-up.
