Ben Goldberg's versatility on the clarinet is unquestionable, so it's not surprising to see him crop up in a variety of situations, from John Zorn's radical Jewish assaults to Tin Hat's folkloric hybrids. But his choice of collaborators on his own project comes as a bit of a shock — given his apparent chamber leanings, what are groove-jam guitarist Charlie Hunter and powerhouse drummer Scott Amendola doing in the lineup? The pragmatic answer is that all four (the final member is trumpeter Ron Miles on CD, trombonist Curtis Fowlkes on tour) have ties to the Bay Area music scene, but more importantly, Goldberg's compositions for the group are somehow lilting and jagged, a canny blend of the esoteric and the electric.
