It is a bit curious that an instrument as expressive as the cello has not been accorded more concerto treatments. The list of piano and violin concertos is seemingly endless by comparison. Recent times have been more favorable for the cello, and in any case, there is one indisputable masterpiece in the format, from the pen of Czech composer Dvorák. His magnificent Cello Concerto will be the highlight of the elegant conductor Peter Oundjian's guest podium appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra this week. He will also present music of Mozart and Nielsen, and the fine young cellist Alisa Weilerstein will solo in the Dvorák.
