Kristyn Souder is an exemplar of Zenkaikon's dedication to being a fan-run event. She began as an attendee at the 2007 convention, became a volunteer for Zenkaikon in 2008, and is now its public relations coordinator. With a full lineup of martial arts discussion panels, anime Jeopardy, anime-themed karaoke and Whose Line Is It Anime?, it's clear why attendance has more than tripled since the 2005 Zenkaikon. One of the convention's most popular events is a cosplay take on The Dating Game. (Never fear, recluses: Zenkaikon's Web site assures us that "no real dating is involved.") There'll also be a cosplay masquerade involving skits, a show by members of the Geek Comedy Tour, and a performance by Japanese rock band Eden Star. While local anime conventions are by no means rare, Souder says, "There seemed to be a bit of a void in the Philadelphia region." This two-day, 33-hour convention should satiate that. For now.
