The Fightin' Phils may have lost to the Yankees, but there's still hope yet for a Philadelphia victory over New York City. Even better, such a triumph could go down at home — this year's national roller derby tournament for the Women's Flat Track Derby Association is taking place in Philly, where our Liberty Belles are favored to win against NYC's Gotham Girls, and take first place in the country. But we're not a total shoo-in: The Belles, currently No. 1 in the East, say practice has never been more intense. They've been busy scheming up strategies for this weekend's games, and anticipate a close match against the Texas Roller Girls, as well. But at this three-day, 12-team event, NYC is by far their biggest obstacle. Says player Vanessa Jackson, "They have always been the metaphorical thorn in our side." Amen, girls.
