Ars Nova Workshop's Composer Portrait concerts have been illuminating experiences, emphasizing the vision of some of modern jazz's greatest figures rather than the improvisational individuality that so often draws attention. This season ANW offers a series dedicated to great alto saxophonist Tim Berne, kicking off with this thrilling show. The expansive, wide-ranging music of Philly free-jazz quartet Shot x Shot has long shown evidence of Berne's influence, and here they'll perform the music of his groundbreaking band Bloodcount, which blew everyone's mind in the '90s and recently rose from the grave to do it all over again. In addition, the evening will include a screening of Eyenoises ... The Paris Movie 1994, an abstract documentary of Bloodcount performance footage; local quartet Bird Fly Yellow will perform the "Flat Out Jump Suite" by Berne's mentor, Julius Hemphill (who was the subject of a Composer Portrait series last season); and Berne himself will make an appearance. He'll return again in December for two nights of concerts in a variety of musical settings.
