Two years ago, artist and former skater Victor Perez had a lightbulb moment and decided to collide his two passions. His upcoming exhibit, "Upcycle," will feature about 15 of these hand-carved "Sk8lamps." "I call it 'Upcycle' instead of 'Recycle' because I'm making it better, stepping it up," says Perez, who finds old, broken skateboards at thrift shops, sands off the graphics and stickers, and carves them into funky shapes before attaching lighting fixtures. For this series Perez went with the stripped-wood theme and carved the boards into female nudes (get it?). His favorite part? "Sanding the boobs."
