Nearly 15 years ago, feisty talk show host Jane Velez-Mitchell put her addiction to alcohol on lockdown, and now she's ready to reveal the gritty details. On Saturday, she'll be reading from her best-selling memoir, iWant: My Journey from Addiction and Overconsumption to a Simpler, Honest Life (HCI, Sept. 1), in which she shares her experience grappling with alcoholism and how that led to a dependence on other stimulants (sugar; shopping). She also offers advice to those who may be suffering from their own forms of addiction. "The only thing that has to change is everything," says Velez-Mitchell, who believes important transitions, such as becoming vegan and being open about her sexuality, have been key to keeping her on track to a cleaner, freer lifestyle.
