Nun Sense
This was really a great article ["The Rehab Wars," Isaiah Thompson, Dec. 10]. Beautiful photos by Neal Santos.
It's a shame that Councilman Darrell Clarke is such a ridiculous man; I'm in no way surprised to see that he would deny space for an obviously successful project. Everyone who lives in this city knows that Kensington has a huge drug problem, and that we need good, strong recovery homes to help solve that. I'd rather have solid homes in my neighborhood than drug addicts. Sanchez and Clarke really need to think about the problems of the communities they represent and start meeting them, and that means addressing drug issues and supporting places like this, rather than sending out L&I for inspections and trying to shut these projects down.
I don't see what differentiates this column from any other run-of-the-mill political column, snarky references to Philadelphia sports and all ["Smarty Pants: This Lousy Compromise," Dec. 10].
It doesn't take a Ph.D. in political science to know that pandering to the median voter is only going to bring about watered-down, ineffective legislation. That fact isn't any less obvious than "the escalation in Afghanistan is bad."
I am not hating on City Paper or the author of this column, I'd just like to see you stop underestimating the intellect of your readership. Instead of restating the obvious, why not use your expertise to — in the words of another commentator — "make an appeal or propose a solution"?
I was part of the counter-protest at the Basilica of St. Peter & Paul on Sunday night ["A Million Stories: Phelps in Philly," Dec 10]. I told the WBC crew to get the fuck out of our city. I was told by a cop that I should watch my mouth if I didn't want to make his job harder. I explained that anything that I could have to say could not be more disrespectful to the church than the signs the WBC were carrying. Apparently calling Catholic priests "fags" is less disrespectful than saying "fuck" in front of a church.
