A “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for egg rolls is fine by Cory Kahaney. “In [Chinese restaurants], the kosher laws kind of dissolve,” she says. For the second year, Kahaney will be hosting the Moo Shu Jew Show, a mash-up of dining and comedy that celebrates the American-Jewish tradition of eating Chinese food on Christmas. The family-style banquet will include sweet and sour fish, veggie lo mein, spinach dumplings, eggplant in black bean sauce, and kung pao chicken. Kahaney will perform her own standup act before introducing the night’s three other comedians. Brad Zimmerman, she says, is a “struggling actor/waiter” who finally made his breakthrough in comedy, while Michelle Balan is “the perpetually single Jewish girl.” Completing the group is Gregg Rogell, an “acerbic, bitter, suspicious, smart-ass guy who tends to like his dog better than girls, but he still wants to get married.” So his bubbe would like to believe, anyway.
