NOW SEATING
Open since Monday, Green Eggs is a South Philly neighborhood café from Old City club-scene veterans Stephen J. Slaughter and William Bonforte. The "green" in the name refers to the owners' eco-friendly approach to doing business — they used sustainable materials for the build-out of the sunny, multi-room 50-seater, and they rely on compostable/biodegradable takeout materials. The "eggs" part? A solid-priced breakfast/lunch/brunch menu available daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (The café's full hours are 7 to 7, with a supplemental menu of pastries, sandwiches and coffee beverages available both before 8 and after 4.) [NOTE: Zavino's original debut date of Wed., Dec. 30 has been pushed back. The restaurant is currently targeting Sat., Jan. 2 for its opening.]
Chef Steve Gonzalez is serving pizzas, antipasti, cured meats and a selection of entrées at Zavino, his new restaurant/wine bar at 13th and Sansom. (This corner is hopping with new additions — Michael Schulson just opened Sampan around the corner; Valerie Safran and Marcie Turney will debut Mediterranean restaurant Barbuzzo next door in the coming months; and the Vintage/Time team's opening its bar, called Bar, at 1309 Sansom.) At Zavino's polished, narrow space, which seats around 40, check out pies like the polpettini (red sauce, provolone, mini veal meatballs) or the fratello (béchamel, broccoli, roasted garlic, Claudio's mozzarella) plus plates like braised pork al pomodoro. They're offering about 30 wines, with by-the-glass and bottle selections. Late-night eats will be a draw — the plan is to serve food till midnight Sunday to Wednesday and till 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. More pics/info on Meal Ticket.
The team behind Shank's Original (120 S. 15th St.) has expanded its brand down to the waterfront with a walk-up counter (and, in the warmer months, an outdoor seating area) at the intersection of Columbus Boulevard and Christian Street. Shank's Pier 40 offers a trimmed-down version of the menu at the Center City restaurant, but all the well-loved classics established at Shank's now-closed South Philly location — the chicken cutlet sandwich, the roast pork Italiano, the Giambotti (Italian for "holy hell that is a huge omelette") — are available here, too. Hours: Mon.-Fri., 6 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sat., 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
