The subjects in Family (Chronicle, June) ain't like no family of mine. As documented by photographer Lauren Dukoff, they hop fences, dress up in flamboyant gypsy gowns, hang out naked and, above all, make music together. It's perfectly un-creepy, though: The "family" is made up of Devendra Banhart's friends, freaks and comely colleagues, which include Joanna Newsom, Natasha Khan and Dukoff herself. It'll make you wish you were related.
Farewell and adieu, Mew Gallery. After three years, Carolynne McNeel and Lauren Parker are closing the doors to their Bella Vista indie art boutique. There will be some parting fanfare, namely a sale Jan. 2 to 11, during which the ladies Mew will sell off the rest of their goods, including furniture and fixtures from the store. We wish Parker and McNeel lots of luck, but we're still sad to see Mew go.
All hail Netflix streaming services. The site-that-killed-the-video-store teamed up with the Criterion Collection, and they're currently streaming 35 movies from the venerable DVD distro's vaults, including Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête, Fellini's 8 and Linklater's Slacker, among others. This is film school right in your computer, people.
