Seven-Course Pairing Dinner at Crossing Vineyards

This educational meal will bring together Crossing Vineyards' wines with seven courses, all to school attendees on the practice of pairing food with vino. An instructor will walk guests through why certain grapes complement specific flavors — check out match-ups like Thai curry samosas paired with a Riesling and grilled baby lamb chops accompanied by a Cabernet Franc. Science on Tap: The Origin and Evolution of Beer
Mon., Jan. 11, 6 p.m., free

Ernie Schuyler, curator emeritus of botany at the Academy of Natural Sciences here in Philly, specializes in rare plant species and botanical history. He's also a hophead. The beer fanatic will lead a discussion of the origins of beer as part of the monthly Science on Tap series. Schuyler will touch on how farmers first cultivated barley, as well as the circumstances surrounding developments in brewing, such as the introduction of hops and fermentation. 10 Days of Olde Bartholomew Barleywine

This weekend marks the end of the Yards' 10-day (really 11-day) tour promoting the 10.3 percent ABV Olde Bartholomew barleywine at local bars. Tonight, they'll tap a firkin at Kite & Key (1836 Callowhill St.) at 7 p.m. On Jan. 8, look for Old Bart at Pub & Kitchen (1946 Lombard St.) and London Grill (2301 Fairmount Ave.), where they'll tap pins at 5 and 8 p.m., respectively. The last firkin will be tapped at the P.O.P.E. (1501 E. Passyunk Ave.) on Jan. 9 at noon.

Center City District Restaurant Week
Jan. 17-22 and 24-29, $20-$35

The first Restaurant Week of 2010 is still 10 days out, but start snatching up rezzies now, lest ye get stuck at a chain eatery on a Friday night at 5:15 p.m. The same $20 three-course lunch and $35 three-course dinner deals apply.
