Streb

New Yorker Elizabeth Streb has a MacArthur "genius award" and a superlative imagination. Her particular brilliance is in intertwining odd, beautiful props with her saucy, talented troupe. Feb. 4-6, Annenberg Center.

New Edge Mix

Every year, Community Education Center exec director Theresa Shockley and her crew put together programs showcasing work by new experimental dance artists (among their alums: Rennie Harris). It's worth the trip to West Philly. Feb. 19-21 and May 14-16, CEC, 3500 Lancaster Ave., 215-387-1911, cecarts.org.

Black Grace

This New Zealand all-male dance troupe fuses traditional Pacific Rim moves with more familiar modern dance. Program includes Samoan slap dancing and music — something you don't often see or hear in the West. Feb. 26-27, Kimmel Center, 300 S. Broad St., 215-893-1999, kimmelcenter.org.

Pennsylvania Ballet

With Matt Neenan's The Crossed Line and Jerome Robbins' In the Night and The Concert, audiences will get to sample choice work from two vastly different experimenters tied together with Chopin. (Come back in June for a Romeo and Juliet streamlined and simplified by European choreographer John Cranko.) March 13-14, Academy of Music, 1420 Locust St., 215-551-7000, paballet.org.

Jeanne Ruddy Dance

Ruddy and her Performance Garage have become an integral part of the local dancescape. Celebrating her 10th season, Ruddy presents three of her own works created over that time period, exploring death, abuse and elegance. April 8-11, Wilma Theater, 265 S. Broad St., 215-546-7824, ruddydance.org.

BalletX

Spring brings the Xers back onstage, performing a new ballet by Thang Dao, a young innovator with his own New York-based experimental troupe. April 14-18, Wilma Theater, balletx.org.

Philadanco

Joan Myers Brown and her troupe celebrate surviving and thriving through four tumultuous, joyous, innovative decades in dance. A cultural institution at home and abroad, Danco sets the benchmark for stellar African-American performance art. April 15-18, Kimmel Center.

Bad Boys of Dance

Founder Rasta Thomas modestly calls his troupe "the most talented and versatile young male dancers in the world." They've got the talent — and the 'tude — and there isn't a move they won't do. April 15-17, Annenberg Center.
