More than 20 purveyors will come together this Saturday for the first-ever farmers market at the Piazza at Schmidts. The lineup features many farmers familiar to local food fans, including Griggstown Quail Farm, Culton Organics, Shellbark Hollow Farm, Natural Meadows Farm and many more. Rachel Klein, who runs Miss Rachel's Pantry personal chef service, will lead a class on hearty vegan cooking at La Cucina. Klein will teach attendees how to prepare chicken-style seitan wrapped in puff pastry with shiitake gravy and stewed collards, cream of broccoli soup and a fruit tart for dessert. This monthly mixer brings together vegans, vegetarians and the "veg-curious" for a bit of "socially conscious socializing." Cantina Dos will provide food/drink specials — check out the "Creamsicle," a vegan horchata/papaya/tequila concoction, or the "Gin Rickey," ginger-coconut rum punch served in a pineapple. The Institute plans to settle the long-standing feud between the breweries of America and Belgium. (I didn't know we were fighting, but am OK with pretending like we have been for centuries in the name of drinking.) On-tap selections will include U.S. Belgian-style beers like Ommegang Rare VOS and Weyerbacher Merry Monks alongside real-deal Belgians like La Chouffe Golden and La Rulle Cuvee Mielleure Voieux. Brown-liquor lovers should start priming their swishing skills for the five-course whiskey-based feast prepared by the Yardley Inn’s Eben Copple.
