Blahg Humbug

"I won't be happy if you print my name."

Lots of people think they know who's behind the anonymously written Artblahg, a parody of Roberta Fallon and Libby Rosof's popular Artblog. From an ISP in Willow Grove, the longtime Philadelphia multimedia artist — perhaps with contributions from his "frenz" — takes scatological glee in making up slightly encrypted names for institutions and people. The publication you are now reading is called the "Shity Paper," and this writer is "Robya Vice."

The blahg's only message is that curators, granting institutions and art writers practice cronyism. It nearsightedly fails to recognize that in all places, all times and all professions, people tend to favor their friends — not necessarily with the intention of being unfair but simply because they know them. Local artists benefit from the fact that Philadelphia has several distinct groups of powerful art figures. But the blahgger's real problem is that his signed efforts aren't getting enough attention. Perhaps his sour, infantile attitude has something to do with it — but it just might be the mediocrity of his work.

It is intriguing that one of the blahgger's pals, a writer with a regular Philadelphia gig and occasional contributor to a national publication, has not been a target. Perhaps the blahgger hypocritically hopes she'll remember what frenz are for.

Usually the blahg's attacks are speculative, but in writing about Arcadia ("Arcane") University Art Gallery's prestigious juried "Works on Paper" show, it made specific, erroneous and potentially damaging claims. Supposedly, they originated with a "reliable insider." It says the gallery "tagged works ... to separate the loser artists from the cool artists (sic) work it wanted the juror to pick."

Gallery Director Richard Torchia, who was teaching during the jurying process, told me that the putative "tags" might have been the numbered Post-it notes used by gallery workers to keep track of the 1,200-plus works. "I felt bad that the students were being accused of this," he says. "They're work-study students, many of whom aren't even art majors. It's just preposterous." (A thoughtful consideration of the "Works on Paper" show can be found at Annette Monnier's blog, onereviewamonth.com. Monnier's discussion is especially worthwhile because, like hundreds of other artists, she entered the show and was rejected.)

I called the blahg's likely author and invited him to claim what might be his best-known work. When pushed, he denied any and all responsibility. He did complain that I have not written enough about his art efforts. "I'm a serious artist. ... City Paper is being criticized by this person or persons and naturally they are angry and want to stop [it]," he said. "I don't take credit for that [blahg], and I won't be happy if you print my name. Your paper is full of shit if they do something like that."

It is scary and sobering to learn what an ordinary-seeming person may say under the dubious cloak of anonymity. The character of the blahgger is evident in last Sunday's entry: "There is a law written down on a stone tablet at every local publication that if there's a show on Jewishness or anything related it MUST [be] chiseled down in print. This time it's the Gerber Why [Gershman Y], soon it will be the No-Goy Museum everywhere you look. Oy Vey!!!!!!"

In contrast to the blahg's witless vitriol, actions like those of the Guerrilla Girls and, in the late 1980s, Philadelphia's Michael McFeat, remind us that anonymous parody — when done cleverly — can present a provocative and entertaining perspective.

In Artblahg's infancy, Roberta and Libby seemed amused by the copycat. "Do you see that it's just like us — isn't that fun? They must love us!" they said in November. But novelty wears off. "This is not The Daily Show," they report. "It is humorless, whining cyberbullying and half-truths. After a week, we stopped going there." I agree. Don't bother.

While I don't agree with much of what the artblahg has to say. I really don't think that using up precious print space for arts coverage to disregard them is a valuable use of time. There are too many underrepresented artists that could use coverage. On cronyism while you are correct that it exists in all professions, that is not a basis for accepting it. Whether you like it or not, the artblahg has a point regarding 'friendz'.

The links provided on this page were allowed by Citypaper. And the comment section could be used as a tool by Robin Rice, or others on the staff, posing as anonymous commenters to do their dirty work. Plus this article is too thinly veiled to begin with.

Up until now we at artblahg have kept our word about refraining from using real names, including that of our commenters and have published warnings on our blahg.

BTW, we are a satirical blahg and if you ever noticed dum, dum, that shows like "The Onion", "The Daily Show" and others use real names and faces all the time. We were being nice until you a-wipes broke the rules and now your frenz will have to pay.

Ooouuuu, Carolina, we should stop meeting like this!!!!!

No reason to cover the same ground everyone else does. No reviews for staff member artists. Skip the big names who get plenty of notice, go for the less obvious. Make studio visits to good artists who aren't being given shows (be creative!). Stay away from conflix like writers who get paid from orgs and then give them reviews. Lean towards solo shows.

You can make a list of groups and individuals you can ask for recommendations from time to time if your writers don't know anyone outside their circle.

I'm all ears. If you'd like to send me recommendations for artists who are in no way frenz of anyone with too much power/prestige, I'll gladly read it.

Relatedly, I'm sure you know of our monthly First Friday Focus column. Does this piss you off, as well? Or is it just criticism that irks you? I can tell you that I personally strive to find under-reported galleries and give them shout-outs when I can. (Here, for example: http://citypaper.net/articles/2009/12/03/first-friday-focus). I'm already preparing a mental list of reasons I'm wrong about that.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, either publicly or via e-mail. Your choice.

Cox Purple Eye gets way too much attention, plleeeeezzzzzzz. Other things sound kinda pc, if it doesn't have a hook it's too hard to write about even if it's great, right???!!!!!!

I find it amazing that someone whose art is known for its mediocrity and redundancy would have the cojones to take on the Philadelphia art community, and a professional in the arts, like Robin Rice. Your work is crap and always has been. You have tried your best to copy the work of your fellow artists and failed, so what did you do?? You try your hand at other mediums like video and now a blog? (which again you had to copy). Obviously your lack of confidence, probably because of your short stature makes you hide behind anonymity . It could also be the fact that you single handedly have managed to piss off most of the curators and gallery owners in the area. If things are going so bad for you here in Philly, then get the hell out of dodge...and don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. We won't miss you.

Seems like no matter who we cover, as long as they're showing their work in a gallery, they're on your shit list.

Also, a side note: Is it really necessary to go after Robin with personal attacks (on her weight, etc., and photoshopping images of her head on a naked devil-body)? Why go there at all? Instead of coming off as someone with a steadfast mission to expose what you see as unfairness in the arts, you come off as a bully, which is really unproductive.

Answer: they don’t. They undermine it. Frankly it’s not in your best interest or in the best interest of the message you want to get across (which generally speaking has some validity) to continue with the hater thing.

The reason 95% of the posters to your blog post negative comments isn’t because 95% of the art community are insiders (which you seem to believe); it’s because 95% of the art community can’t get past your hate to your message. Any attempts to reason with you are met with more hate.

That’s all well and good, but you’re now impersonating other people in those comments - on artblagh, on artblog, on theartblahg. And you can’t make the argument that it’s tit-for-tat in response to this article because it’s not just Carolyn or Robin you’re impersonating.

This kind of behavior is irresponsible and unethical. It’s one thing to parody using real names - that’s arguably a protected form of free speech.

It’s quite a different thing to actually present yourself AS that person online, since for all intents and purposes a stranger will have great difficulty differentiating between authentic posts/comments from an individual and your impersonations.

In other words, you’re messing with people’s personal lives, not just now, but far into the future, since this stuff essentially lives forever. Character assassination, in short, or, if you like, identity theft.

Is that the career you really want?

I’m not a big fan of whatever kind of “outing” this article attempted, regardless of whether it correctly identified you. I’m not defending it.

I’m also not frenz with Robin, Carolyn, theartblahg, artblahg or artblog. I’ve met the artblog folks exactly once. I’ve never met Robin or Carolyn. I wouldn’t know who to talk to at theartblahg. They’re strangers to me. So YOU talk to them.

I personally don’t care who you are, and am not interested in your secret batman alter ego.

I do think moderated or authenticated posts would be the way to go here, and elsewhere, and thanks for understanding my concerns. I recognize that getting pissed on puts one on the defensive. I just don’t think this particular pissing contest is helping anyone.

I think that you are the person behind the artblahg, Vincent Romaniello. Vincent, am I wrong? Please deny if it is untrue, but I know you can't. I see that 2 people have now classified you as a teabagger. You using the teabagger analogy is really a sophomoric attempt to turn things around. THEartblahg.blogspot.com is probably the parody of your site that H&H is/are referring to. Yeah, it’s childish, sophmoric, infantile and juvenile. Which puts it miles above artblahg.blogspot.com :)

Plus, it’s actually funny. Especially when something designed to be as stupid as possible comes out smarter than the target of the parody.

I will say I’ve only had one comment censored by artblahg, and have had many very critical comments posted. I haven’t experienced any kind of real censorship there. My criticism has mainly been reserved for what he does, though, not who he is, so maybe that’s a factor.

The fact remains that he remains impervious to critique because he’s incapable of hearing it. He seems to think that the multitude of posters on different forums, including his own, are the product of maybe 2 people, while the 3 positive posts on his own site are the product of a loyal “silent majority”.

The bottom line is that the delusional can only be helped by medical professionals.

Ok, I apologize for dragging any innocent bystanders into this. I was fueled by a series of commments between Vincent and several members of Sage on Vincent's "out" blog within the past 2 or 3 days. I find it hard to believe that if **I** know who writes that malicious column, then so do they. I sincerely apologize if they don't, but visits to each other's studio, as mentioned on Vincent's blog, suggest a deeper connection, that's all. Vincent Romaniello is a creep and a bully hiding behind his cloak of anonymity and for people to say "I didn't know it was him" just may not fly any longer.

He has put enough personally hurtful stuff out there (and I'm not talking about serious criticsm) so that it really is now the responsibility of the art community- love it or hate it- to put an end to his demagoguery. If everyone keeps pretending that they don't know who he is and shrugs their shoulders at what he writes- until it is about them- then they are approving it by doing nothing.

To innocent artists of Sage: my apologies but what are you thinking?

To artists in the Philadelphia art scene: exclude this guy until and unless he can act towards people as he wants people to act towards him.

I just think the guy is a bully and a creep. When I get too outraged or too bored I'll needle him just to piss him off and to let him know that there are repercussions to that kind and that level of bile. And, I'd hate to be him at any local art functions. Not that he'd attend since he seems to think there's no point to doing anything in 'Fillytown'.
