Hailed as the largest and most prestigious South Asian dance show in the country, PhillyFest 2010 celebrates everything from hammy Bollywood moves to the sleeker, more modern Hindi fusion. Whittled down from more than 40 applicants, the country's 12 best college dance teams will compete for the PhillyFest Cup, including Drexel's Jhalak, Temple's Broad Street Baadshahz and Rutgers' SAPA. But Saturday's fest is about more than mind- and body-bending routines — it's about uniting Indian culture, too. "The funny thing that a lot of people don't know about India is that it's really too big to be one country," says coordinator Raj JP Raina. "Everyone has a different religion, a different language. The one constant of our county is dance." Between performances, Melanie K will keep the audience laughing, and Penn Masala (pictured) will perform an a cappella set.
Sat., Jan. 30, 6:30-10 p.m., $21.50, Merriam Theater, 250 S. Broad St., 215-732-5446, phillyfest.com.
