Peter McAndrews (Modo Mio) and partner Nathan Baynes have brought their Girard Avenue sandwich shop south to the Italian Market. This new Paesano's location features all of their well-loved standards — think the Paesano (beef brisket), the Arista (roast pork) and the Gustaio (roasted lamb sausage) — along with new eats, like the Liveracce (seared beef liver, onions, iceberg, roasted tomato, garlic mayo, Gorgonzola). On the inside, there's sitdown room for about 40, and come spring, there'll be outdoor tables. More photos and the full menu on Meal Ticket.
Chef Mike Jackson, who runs vegetarian eatery Blue Sage in Southampton, has ventured into the city with Thoreau. Jackson, who's running the restaurant with wife Lisa, is doing globally influenced vegetarian plates like buffalo blue blinis (buckwheat pancakes with Maytag mascarpone, wild mushrooms and a carrot chili glaze) and ratatouille sliders with basil pumpkin seed pesto, Manchego, red pepper aioli and Belgian frites. The shtick at this watering hole from Jason and Delphine Evenchik (Vintage) and Terrance Leach and Josh McCullough (GM and chef of the Evenchiks' Time, respectively) is that there is no shtick. No dancing, no karaoke, no venison loin — Bar is a goddamn bar. It's unfussy — nine beers on tap, and tons more in cans (and cans only). Upstairs they've got foosball, a pool table and Golden Tee. To eat? Hot dogs and Cup Noodles. I sampled their dogs and can confirm that they taste like hot dogs. Check out the full beer list on Meal Ticket.
