[ valentine's day ]

It seems like we just unplugged the Christmas lights and now it's time to hand out heart-shaped candies and cutesy cards for Valentine's Day. Whether you're happily in love, brooding over the one that got away or just flat-out horny, there's a V-Day happening with your name written all over it.

Save the Drama for Your Mummy

Penn Museum scholars Jen Wegner and Brian Rose have research proving that humans have been pulling the same tired tricks to get laid since the beginning of time. They will present their findings in a lecture called "Cougars, Playas and Baby Mama Drama in the Ancient World," which Wegner says highlights haggard Egyptian cougars preying on younger men, erotic frescoes from Pompeii and a sexed-up playa who made his way around the catacombs ... if you catch my drift. Thu., Feb. 11, 6:15 p.m., $10, Penn Museum, 3260 South Street, 215-898-5093, penn.museum

Love Is a Dog From Hell

How do you enhance a lovelorn Charles Bukowski poem? How about a blues band wailing in the background? To this end, actor Frank PeterSun will join forces with three bands, as he recites some of Chuck's work and throws back a few at the bar. PeterSun says the evening is perfect for singles but also for dysfunctional couples who need a reminder that things could be a helluva lot worse. Sat., Feb. 13, 8 p.m., $15, Dobbs, 304 South St., 215-620-8251.

Lions and Tigers and... Copulation? Oh, My!

If you're looking for ways to spice it up in the bedroom, take a few pointers from the zoo. Lovin' on the Wild Side, a guided tour complete with brunch and a glass of bubbly, will enlighten guests about the mating habits of some of the facility's kinkiest inhabitants. Take special note of the bats (they do it upside down!) and the tigers (they like it rough). Sat.-Sun., Feb. 13-14, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., $75 per person,$150 per couple, Philadelphia Zoo, 3400 W. Girard Ave., 215-243-1100, philadelphiazoo.org.

Sold to the Gay in the Second Row

If you've been unsuccessful tracking down a love bunny to spend the holiday with, then why not fork over some of that hard-earned cash and buy one. No, not a hooker. Like, a legitimate auction to raise money for a cherished cultural institution. The Philadelphia Gay Men's Chorus will be offering up six of their most eligible songbirds at their Seventh Annual Bachelor Auction. The winners receive dinner with their purchased date at one of Philly's finest eateries and if you play your cards right he just might serenade you before you send him packing. Fri., Feb. 12, 9 p.m., $10-$15, Voyeur Nightclub, 1221 St. James St., 215-731-9230, pgmc.org.

A Meat-Free Dance Party

If you're a vegetarian looking for a like-minded soul mate, head to this cocktail and dance party hosted by the Humane League of Philadelphia. Director Nick Cooney says two connected private rooms are reserved for the affair, which will feature a DJ spinning a variety of jams and delicious vegan appetizers. Even though the Humane League is a fan of the animals, there are no furry friends allowed — unless of course it's that funky chicken you always flap out on the dance floor. Sat., Feb. 13, 8 p.m., $10, Dark Horse Pub, 421 S. Second St., 215-928-9307, veganvalentine.info
