What exactly constitutes Pacific dance? If you're curious to know, be sure to catch New Zealand-based Black Grace at the Kimmel Center this weekend. Known for bold, expressive performance, the 14-year-old troupe blends martial arts, ritual dance and contemporary movement. The program includes works either inspired by or commenting on Polynesian society, two of which feature a Samoan technique known as slap dancing. Expect exposure to performance rarely seen in these parts, not to mention some highly athletic acrobatic dance. Add in music that runs from Bach to hip-hop to Afro Celt Sound System, and you've got a true cultural mash-up.
