Word that L.A. hardcore purists The Bronx were recording an album of traditional Mexican music definitely raised some eyebrows, but last year's Mariachi El Bronx is neither jokey gimmick nor overreaching oddity. It's compellingly crafted, wholeheartedly sincere (doubters should note the presence of David Hidalgo of Chicano rock godheads Los Lobos — and childhood neighbor to the band's lead shouter-turned-crooner, Matt Caughthran — on accordion), surprisingly straight-faced, and an utter delight, even if you thought you liked neither mariachi nor punk.
Sat., April 3, 9 p.m., $13-$15, with The Bronx, Violent Soho and Dead Country, North Star Bar, 2639 Poplar St., 215-787-0488, northstarbar.com.
