Back in '08, Pilot Cloud was just minting its identity. The Philly duo's debut, In Transition, was thrilling but hermetic, a meticulous contraction of abstract sounds. Now established as formidable post-rock, Pilot Cloud has become relaxed and adventurous. The Halcyon EP — downloadable at pilotcloud.com and celebrating its release at North Star tonight — sees former alt-punk dudes Justin Lerner and Nick Biscardi indulging some serious Godspeed You! Black Emperor fantasies, incorporating staticky ragtime samples and field recordings of playgrounds and rest stops into their compositions. The songs are as epic in scope as their early work, but this time, they're more emotive (dig the aching, gorgeous sprawl of "Meridian"). We've seen Pilot Cloud's icy skill. Now we're getting a glimpse at its soul.
