[ life is a cabaret ]
After nearly 20 years of playing a shamefully aging, boozy lounge singer in the hot mess cabaret duo Kiki & Herb, Justin Bond is ready to belt out his own ditties. He may still be wearing red lipstick and slinking around in a form-flattering sequined gown, but now his sentiments cut a little deeper. In his current cabaret act, the gender-fucking singer/songwriter will be telling stories and singing tunes from his EP, Pink Slip, that are dedicated to the neo-pagan revolution. Huh? "It's for people who aren't living their lives based on the dictates of an oppressive, mainstream culture," he says, "My stories are reflective of my experience growing up queer in a Christian, conservative society." Though Bond sings with a pepped up baritone that could rival Barry White, he says his performance style is influenced by radical female artists, like singers Patti Smith and Marianne Faithfull and author Joan Didion. At the end of his show he'd like his audience to walk away thinking. But even more than that he just wants them to depart in a nice, randy mood. Says Bond: "I really hope they'll feel like getting it on with someone when they get home."
