In 1979, when oceanographer Sylvia Earle set the record for deepest untethered walk on the ocean floor (1250 feet), there were less than 100 ocean dead zones — oxygen-depleted areas that are devastating to aquatic life. Today, there are over 400. Earle will screen a short film and discuss her book The World is Blue: How Our Fate and the Ocean's Are One (National Geographic), which examines humanity's role in these and other oceanic changes.
