For the record, this Old City bar — a revamp of Skinner's, with partial ownership from married It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson — does not serve milk steak with a side of jelly beans. Artemis won't be running your food and Green Man is not flipping burgers behind the line. (There are, however, show-themed eats, like a "Sweet D's Sausage & P's" sandwich and an "It's Always Sunnyside Up" eggs plate.) This is a pub, with 16 beers on tap, between 60 and 70 bottles and grub from chef Michael Suminski, formerly of the defunct Ortlieb's. Mac's, which officially opens today, June 3, is owned by a team of longtime friends and St. Joe's Prep graduates (McElhenney is one).
Steve Poses, he of the legendary Frog and Commissary restaurants, has been out of the public dining sphere for some time now, concentrating instead on his catering business. This seasonal (and liquor-licensed) burger stand, on the front lawn of the Franklin Institute, marks the chef's easy-breezy return to the Philly fray. Frog Burger, which is now open daily from noon till dusk (weather permitting), serves several varieties of burgers, dogs, crab rolls, shakes and desserts, namely the Commissary's carrot cake and chocolate fudge "killer cake." Seating is split up between picnic tables, communal tables and provided picnic blankets. The stand's signature item? The Love Burger, a flame-grilled patty sandwiched between two grilled cheese sandwiches in lieu of bread. That is love! Follow twitter.com/frogburger for daily updates.
Mojo is the glimmering black beast of a coffee truck run by husband-and-wife Guy Angelella and Kimberly Edwards. The duo is brewing New Orleans Roast coffee and serving a selection of sandwiches, panini and other eats. Right now they operate Monday to Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on the corner of 38th and Spruce.
