[ haunted hausu ]
The idea of the evil abode — the ultimate safe space that is anything but — has been around since some guy figured out that people will pay money to have the shit scared out of them. But there are few movies like Nobuhiko Obayashi's House (Hausu), a blend of fantasy, horror and humor. Screening for the first time ever in Philly (it only hit U.S. shores earlier this year), Obayashi's 1977 feature-film debut deals with a girl and a handful of her classmates who travel to her sick aunt's house, only to encounter cackling severed heads, a piano on the attack, a man transformed into fruit and the meanest house cat of all time. Obayashi took cues from his apparently weird 11-year-old daughter, giving the film a dreamy haze. Don't be afraid to go home tonight — just make sure you turn the lights on.Sat., June 5, 7 p.m., $8, Ibrahim Theater at International House, 3701 Chestnut St., 215-387-5125, ihousephilly.org.
