There are few things these days that vegans and non-vegans agree on, but there's a good chance they'll find common ground on Meritage's new vegan tasting menu. Featuring dishes such as grilled Japanese eggplant with a kaffir lime curry sauce and mushroom lentil sticky rice in a banana leaf, the four-course menu is a more-than-fair compromise between foie gras and quinoa. Meritage Restaurant and Wine Bar, 500 S. 20th St., 215-985-1922, meritagephiladelphia.com.
Join Lacroix chef de cuisine Jason Cichonski and sommelier Eric Simonis for a four-course dinner paired with wines from the Loire Valley. Courses include a warm scallop escabeche and veal shoulder with confit ramps. Lacroix at The Rittenhouse, Rittenhouse Hotel, 210 W. Rittenhouse Square, 215-546-9000, lacroixrestaurant.com.
Tired of First Friday finger food? Put down the canapés and head over to Brewerytown for an afternoon of art and soul food. Check out works by emerging and established artists (read about one in the Arts section) and fill up on the stuff you really want to eat as the neighborhood comes together to turn West Girard Avenue into one big gallery and outdoor festival. An after-party will be held at the North Star Bar. 2500-2900 blocks of West Girard Avenue, artplussoulfood.blogspot.com.
Brunch at Sabrina's has long been one of Philly's worst-kept secrets (just take a look at the around-the-block lines), and now the recipe for the institution's beloved stuffed French toast is about to become one, too. After La Cucina's Sabrina's-centric cooking class (led by "brunchmeister" chef Lance Silverman), you may never have to brave the 45-minute wait again — though we'll bet you'll keep going back for the original thing. La Cucina at the Market, Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch streets, 215-922-1170, lacucinaatthemarket.com.
