Very probably the second-funkiest crew ever to emerge from Staten Island, the 10-plus Daptone-affiliated Afro-soulsters who constitute the Budos adopt an admirably workmanlike, no-nonsense approach to laying down sinfully thick, nasty grooves. Their forthcoming Budos Band III offers up but precisely what its title promises: another solid serving of churning, horn-heavy funk nuggets that rarely exceed the four-minute mark and almost never stray from menacingly seedy minor keys, even on "Reppirt Yad," a Beatles-inverting psych-out that continues their string of inventive covers in fine style.
