Eat the Tweet

Philly chefs you should follow on Twitter.

Published: Sep 15, 2010

Philadelphia's chefs are a bunch of tweeting fools. But while our favorite local cooks do spend a good amount of time using Twitter to keep eaters posted on their latest dishes, specials or culinary explorations, they also use the all-powerful social media tool to rant about topics like sports, the weather, their latest meal or, in the case of people like South Philly Tap Room's Scott Schroeder, absolutely everything. Here, in no particular order, is a selection of Philly chefs you should follow on Twitter.

Matthew Levin, Adsum (@ChefLevin) Following Levin guarantees you a peek into the inner mental workings of a chef who's just opened a restaurant (Adsum debuted in July). That means plenty of updates between 1 and 4 a.m. Sample Tweet: (re: the Philly Naked Bike Ride) "To ride my bike naked through town or not to ride my bike naked through town? I'm gonna go with hell effin no!"

Moon Krapugthong, MangoMoon (@mymangomoon) The chef/owner of Main Street Manayunk's MangoMoon regularly pimps out tantalizing details from her Southeast Asian street food restaurant. Sample Tweet: "We just had marinated duck gizzards from the grill ... Delicious and crunchy!!!"

Scott Schroeder, South Philly Tap Room (@foodsyoucaneat) Perhaps the most prolific tweeting chef of the bunch is Schroeder, who's bothered by a lot of things, from Yelp and Top 40 radio to Whole Foods and "girls with the same body type as me." Sample Tweet: "The next person I see with a handle bar moustache that's under the age of 50 dies"

Jeremy Nolen, Brauhaus Schmitz (@BrauhausChef) Nolen, chef at South Street's German beer bar, regularly posts sausage-riffic photos. Sample Tweet: "Pastrami! It's like corned beef's cool uncle."

Delilah Winder, Delilah's (@ChefDelilah) The 215's mac 'n' cheese queen always seems to be traveling. Keep up if you can. Sample Tweet: "Is Philly not the city of Sisterly LOVE too... Hello :)"

Gene Giuffi, Cochon (@CochonBYOB) Giuffi fires out plenty of drool-worthy food pics from his homey BYOB, but he also takes time to talk a little smack here and there. A Brooklyn native, he's just now starting to rant about his beloved New York Jets. Sample Tweet: "Tom waits and too much beer='s a good night"

Sean Magee, Time (@chefseanmagee) Currently sous chef at Time, Magee has a knack for snapping great food photos. His feed features some cool behind-the-scenes looks into the Sansom Street eatery's kitchen. Sample Tweet: "Hello massive piece of Lancaster pork belly."

Kevin Sbraga, TBD (@KSbraga) The Top Chef D.C. winner is currently hunting for restaurant real estate, so followers may be the first to know where he lands. Sample Tweet: "I just saw another amazing restaurant space. This one is in Philadelphia. All I can say is WOW!"

Mitch Prensky, Supper (@Supperphilly) Prensky tends to tweet like he speaks, with an enthusiasm difficult to fit into 140 characters or less. But he still manages to fit plenty of food chatter into his updates. Sample Tweet: "Brunch! Brunch! Brunch! (Trying coin a phrase here). Its 'brunchalicious'? Huh? Whaddayathink? Anyways, its happening now til 3pm. C ya!"

THE BEST OF THE REST: Siobhan Allgood, West Side Gravy (@ChefShiv); Jennifer Carroll, 10 Arts (@ChefJenCarroll); Corbin Evans, The Restaurant School (@corboy11);  Jose Garces, Amada/Chifa/Distrito/Garces Trading Co./Tinto/Village Whiskey (@chefjosegarces); Monica Glass, 10 Arts (@chefmoni); Sam Jacobson, Sycamore (@samjsycamore); David Katz, Mémé (@MemeRestaurant); Eric Paraskevas, terra (@cheftoro); Steve Poses, Frog Burger/Frog Commissary (@Sposes); Michael Schulson, Sampan (@MichaelSchulson); Marc Vetri, Amis/Osteria/Vetri (@marcvetri); Peter Woolsey, Bistrot La Minette (@BistroLaMinette)
