We underestimate Dangerous Ponies by calling them "pop." Sure, their self-titled debut (Punk Rock Payroll) is a delightfully outtacontrol carousel ride where one peppy song snowballs into the next, right in tune and right on time. But the set also steps up the Philly troupe's game exponentially, from smooth '70s harmonies on "What the World Could Be," to booming overall production, to a particularly affecting suite of minor key songs — the Ponies' first venture into darker realms. Singer-guitarist Chrissy Tashjian wrote the two-part "For Mikey" for her brother (and drummer) when he was in the military; it's followed by the string-laden "Get Out of Bed," which is Tashjian's "Eleanor Rigby." Pack some tissues for their Philly record release tomorrow, but don't forget the face paint and glitter.
Fri., Oct. 15, 7 p.m., $5-$7, with Arrah and the Ferns, Sisters 3, Philly AIDS Thrift Warehouse, 514 Bainbridge St., 215-922-3186.
