Nearly 20 years ago in southern California's Inland Empire, John Darnielle strummed furiously and screamed about mythology and going places as The Mountain Goats while Franklin Bruno hung well-turned phrases off power-pop hooks as the frontman for Nothing Painted Blue. Somewhere in the overlapping part of their Venn diagram, Darnielle and Bruno collaborated as The Extra Glenns on a few songs released on Shrimper compilation cassettes. The tape hiss of those early days is gone, as are a few letters from their name. Now known as The Extra Lens, their second album, Undercard, combines the original formula — Bruno's arrangements around Darnielle's guitar and vocals — with a much more polished, practiced sound. Hopefully that maturation won't keep them from covering something by an old Shrimper buddy.
