Frankie Rose has played, sung and written songs for some of the buzziest bands — both sonically and reception-wise — of the past couple years: Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts, Dum Dum Girls. From which pedigree we can surmise that she's A) a girl; B) not inclined to stay in one place for very long; and C) way into sweet, simple, noisy, retro indie-pop. Her new band's self-titled debut (on Slumberland) offers all the hooky surf riffs and sugary girl-group harmonies you'd hope for (plus a well-deployed "Be My Baby" beat), but it's a markedly more spit-polished affair than her past associates' work, with the prevailing signal-to-noise quotient yielding a heavenly haze rather than scuzzy fuzz, and lending the proceedings a serene, almost spiritual vibe.
