In honor of DesignPhiladelphia, the Mural Arts Program (MAP) is turning public art interactive. For Light Drift, a nighttime art installation camping out at the Schuylkill this weekend, award-winning artist cum architect Meejin Yoon assembled 90 glowing radio frequency identification orbs on land and water that respond to human presence and touch — a "mural on the river," Yoon calls it. In 2004, Boston-based Yoon manufactured White Noise/White Light, a response-based sound and light show for the Olympics in Athens. Her latest exhibition fulfills MAP's ideals of community building and environmental preservation. Viewers are encouraged to cooperatively manipulate the LED, recyclable orbs into lighted patterns of different color and intensity. Each land orb corresponds to four in the water, so the result should look like a dynamic Connect Four grid. "For me," Yoon says, "it's really important that there's an opportunity for the public to participate." Consider that your personal invitation.
Opening reception Fri., Oct. 15, 6:30 p.m., free; through Oct. 17, Schuylkill Banks between Chestnut and Market streets, 215-685-0750, muralarts.org.
