We've all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words, but for the Midwives Collective, a socially conscious, women-run studio, words in a book are worth a room full of pictures. For their newest exhibit, the ladies assigned 37 artists a different sentence from a novel, asking them to contribute a photographic piece about what the phrase means to them. The catch? The artists weren't given the name of the novel — they'll find that out when the show opens Friday. "My sentence is, 'After three months, the psychiatrist turned to Jo and said, "It's not penis envy,"'" says artist Kelly Burkhardt. "[To me] the text is visually stimulating ... [and] touches on social movements." Though the submitted works are required to be 8-by-10-inch color photographs, human nature leaves plenty of space for surprises — especially if your sentence is about a dong.
Opening reception Fri., Oct. 15, 6-10 p.m., free; through Nov. 6, 1241 Carpenter St., midwivescollective.com.
