Local artist Andrew Zangerle, who juxtaposes cute sketches of small animals with accompanying phrases like "ass head," is making his Philly solo-show debut at Art Star. For this exhibition, he used acrylic to paint random words like "Chicken" and "Yup" on about a hundred variously sized wood panels that are currently assembled together for display. The idea is not for the viewer to try to derive meaning from the words, Zangerle says, but rather to appreciate that 26 letters of the English alphabet, which are really all just shapes, form distinct meanings when positioned side by side. While many of the painted words were randomly inspired, some emerged from common themes, like food and outer space. "I enjoy the look of words," says Zangerle in his artist statement. "I simply enjoy painting them."
Opening reception, Sat., Oct. 16, 5-8 p.m., free, through Nov. 21, Art Star Gallery & Boutique, 623 N. Second St., 215-238-1557, artstarphilly.com.
